HH the Panchen Lama's 30th Birthday

April 25, 2019

4:00 AM

After the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama is one of the highest Tibetan spiritual leaders. In 1995 Chinese officials kidnapped him at the young age of 6. More than two decades later, Tibetans continue to demand for the Panchen Lama to be released and returned to the people of Tibet. China claims he is living a normal life but they refuse anyone access to him. His Holiness the Panchen Lama will turn 30 on April 25, 2019. This should be an occasion of great celebration for Tibetans everywhere; but instead we will mark this occasion in protest and with sadness as the Panchen Lama has been a prisoner of the Chinese government for 23 years. May 17, 2019 marks 24 years of his enforced disappearance. More information on the Panchen Lama.

March 10: Tibetan National Uprising Day

March 10, 2019

5:00 AM

Potala Palace, Chengguan, Lhasa, Tibet, China

On 10 March 1959, tens of thousands of Tibetans took to the streets of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, rising up against China’s illegal invasion and occupation of their homeland. Every year thousands of Tibetans and their supporters take to the streets across the world to mark the anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day. REMEMBER, RESIST, RETURN! We REMEMBER those who have fallen and our Tibetan brothers and sisters who have continued to suffer under Chinese repression for the past 60 years. We RESIST by demanding justice and freedom from China's unrelenting campaign to wipe out the Tibetan identity through protest, action, and creative means. Through our actions and advocacy there is no doubt that we will RETURN to Tibet one day! A Discussion with Chemi Lhamo

March 10, 2019

9:30 PM

Students for a Free Tibet, East 14th Street, New York, NY, USA

Most of you have probably heard the name "Chemi Lhamo" by now. As a member of the SFT Canada Board, Chemi works tirelessly for Tibet, but recently, her advocacy for Tibet came from an unexpected platform. After winning the University of Toronto Scarborough Student Union president election, Chemi became the victim of online abuse and harassment. Through her strong leadership and compassion, Chemi handled the precarious situation with grace and dignity, further propelling her story into the public eye. With coverage from BBC, CBC, the National Post, VOA, and RFA, among others, Chemi's story has become a viral trending topic seemingly overnight. But many of the bigger issues that Chemi's story deal with have been brewing for years: academic freedom, foreign interference on western campuses, Chinese censorship and China's growing desire to control the Tibet narrative. Join us on March 10 as we dive into a deeper conversation with Chemi Lhamo about the events of her recent election victory. We will discuss topics ranging from her hopes for her presidency; thoughts on Chinese interference and academic freedom; and ways that our community can rally together to combat China's growing desire to control the Tibet narrative. Light refreshments and snacks will be served. The talk will include a Q+A portion, attendees are encouraged to think of questions they would like to ask Chemi. Make sure to check out Chemi's interview with the Central Tibetan Administration to learn more before the event! http://bit.ly/chemilhamo
